e-SKILL for Green
Construction
e-SKILL is a European multinational Leonardo project to develop and deliver
training for construction workers in green technologies,
green building techniques and materials through video and e-learning.
This training in green construction skills is particularly relevant to the UK with the introduction of the new
Green
Deal by the Department of Energy and Climate Change. The Green Deal is intended to
revolutionise the energy efficiency of British properties.
The UK plan is to assess properties and then allow the owners to pay for
the improvement work through their energy bills. The energy suppliers'
previous obligations to assist customers with insulation and other
energy efficiency measures will become a new ECO (Energy Company
Obligation) and integrated with Green Deal finance arrangements.
The Green Deal is set to start in October 2012 and £200 million of
government support has been allocated for the first year.
Construction Skills, the UK's training organisation for the construction
industry is staging a series of
seminars for the construction industry
during January - March 2012 in London, Birmingham, Belfast, Glasgow and
Manchester.
There is also a pan-European initiative,
Build Up, which is a web portal for
energy efficiency in buildings.
Skills required for the Green Deal
Particular skills that are expected to be in demand include loft
insulation, cavity wall insulation, external wall insulation and
draughtproofing; fitting energy saving devices, such as efficient
boilers and underfloor heating; the use of green building materials in
refurbishments; new builds to new low-carbon standards; use of
innovative, eco-friendly building materials and technologies.
The UK government estimate that up to 65,000 construction and insulation workers will
be employed under the Green Deal and many of these will need training in
green skills.
The e-SKILL Leonardo Project
The e-SKILL project will develop a series of training modules, using
video and e-learning, and apply the latest web 2.0 technologies to
deliver these. The project is run by
FEVEC, the Spanish construction
industry federation and training organisation, based in Valencia, along with similar
training providers in Poland, Italy and Lithuania. Funding is from
the EU's Leonardo development of innovation programme
for vocational training.
Enlightenment Interactive was invited to join in order to provide video
and e-learning production, and because of our experience both of
international training video production and of working for major
companies in the construction industry both in the UK and overseas.
e-SKILL has its own website.
UK construction companies are invited to register their interest
in the
e-SKILL project. Free access will be available to UK builders and
installers to the video and e-learning training modules while they are in the Beta or
development stage.

Latest News
The detailed syllabus for the e-learning material is now at an advanced
stage of development.
Enlightenment
Interactive has identified two projects in north west England which
demonstrate green construction skills. One is a new build of 40
houses to the PassivHaus standard, using sustainable materials and
building techniques and achieving a high degree of energy efficiency.
The other is a retrofit of insulation and other energy efficiency
measures on a 120-year old house with solid stone walls.
Agreement has already
been reached to create a video record of at least one of these projects
for inclusion in the e-SKILL training material.
It is planned start
filming demonstrations of other green construction techniques at the
FEVEC construction training school in Valencia from May onwards.
