opus pro multimedia authoring tool

Pro XE 5 is the latest, top-of-the line version of the Opus authoring system (formerly Illuminatus Opus) from Digital Workshop, a friendly little outfit in Banbury, Oxfordshire, who have persevered with a product which now rivals the highly priced multimedia authoring offerings from the major American developers.  Still priced very keenly (around £400 including VAT), Opus now has a comprehensive range of functions, which makes it a very serious contender for developing both both online e-learning based on Flash and media-rich CD or DVD based courseware.  The claim "interactive multimedia development made easy" is well justified, as the interface for the developer is intuitive and supported by a variety of useful shortcuts, formats and resources.

Opus Pro XE is one of a family of products including Opus Presenter at £75, a rival to Powerpoint for creating presentations; Headstart, a multimedia authoring tool aimed at schoolchildren (£49.95) and Presto, a Flash creation tool at £39.95.

Opus Pro retains its original page-based design concept, as opposed to a programmer's flow chart approach.  Essentially you place assets such as graphics, text, stills, audio and video on the page and link these to buttons or timelines, so that they display in the correct sequence and the user can interact with them. As the developer, you keep tabs on the pages and their contents through an interactive display on the left of the working desktop.

More sophisticated elements, such as variables and scripting, allow you to construct quizzes and simulations.  The latest version of Opus is compliant with AICC and SCORM standards, meaning your product will interface with Learning Management Systems; there has been some comment on the Opus user forum that the AICC/SCORM function still leaves you with a lot of work to do to make interaction with an LMS work, but Digital Workshop say they are addressing this. You can now produce material in Opus that will run from a CD-ROM, a DVD, a web / intranet site or as a video file.
